Direct-replacement 3/8" fuel tank sending unit designed for 1971-1973 Ford Mustang models. This sending unit accurately measures fuel level and restores correct gauge operation for classic Mustangs that have lost reliable fuel indication. Built with corrosion-resistant components and standard electrical terminals, it provides dependable service for restoration or maintenance projects and installs with basic hand tools.
Features:
- Fits 1971-1973 Ford Mustang (direct replacement sending unit).
- 3/8" float arm configuration for proper fitment in compatible fuel tanks.
- Measures fuel level to restore accurate dashboard gauge readings.
- Does not include a separate low-fuel warning switch (no fuel warning).
- Corrosion-resistant materials and quality electrical terminals for long life.
- OE-style fit and mounting for straightforward replacement during restoration.
- Simple plug-and-play wiring and float adjustment for easy installation.
Installation / Application:
- Difficulty: 3/5
- Estimated time: 1-2 hours
Instructions:
- Work in a well-ventilated area and ensure no open flames or sparks are nearby.
- Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent sparks.
- Relieve fuel system pressure if applicable and drain or siphon enough fuel to lower the tank level for safe removal.
- Support the fuel tank with a jack and remove any straps, heat shields, or brackets holding the tank in place.
- Lower the tank slightly to access the sending unit; disconnect fuel lines and electrical connectors from the tank before fully lowering.
- Clean the area around the sending unit to prevent dirt falling into the tank, then remove the retaining ring or bolts and lift out the old sending unit.
- Compare the old unit to the new unit to verify orientation and float clearance. Install a new gasket or apply appropriate sealant to the mounting flange.
- Insert the new sending unit, secure the retaining ring or bolts to the recommended snug torque, and reconnect the electrical connector and fuel lines.
- Raise and secure the tank, reinstall straps and shields, reconnect the negative battery cable, and add fuel as needed.
- Test operation: turn the ignition on and observe the fuel gauge or use a multimeter to check sender resistance across float travel. Inspect for leaks and proper gauge response before driving.
