Adjusting sleeve for steering tie rods (right- and left-hand) designed for 1972–1980 Ford, Lincoln and Mercury vehicles. This threaded sleeve allows precise length and alignment adjustments of the inner and outer tie rod ends to restore correct steering geometry and toe settings after replacement or during rebuilds. Machined from durable, corrosion-resistant steel with clean threads and chamfered ends, the sleeve provides reliable, long-lasting performance and smooth adjustment. Ideal for restoration projects and maintenance where accurate steering alignment and secure fastening are required.
Features:
  • Fits 1972–1980 Ford, Lincoln and Mercury models (steering tie rod inner/outer adjustment sleeve).
  • Right- and left-hand threaded design enables precise length adjustments for correct toe alignment.
  • Manufactured from durable, corrosion-resistant steel for long service life and resistance to corrosion.
  • Chamfered ends and clean threads simplify installation and reduce risk of cross-threading.
  • Restoration-grade replacement part — ideal when rebuilding steering linkages or replacing worn adjusting sleeves.
  • Helps secure tie rod ends, reduce play in steering, and maintain safe vehicle handling.
  • Simple drop-in replacement for worn or damaged sleeves to restore factory steering geometry.
Installation / Application:
  • Difficulty: 2/5
  • Estimated time: 30-60 minutes per side
Suggested Tools:
  • jack and jack stands or vehicle lift
  • wheel chocks
  • penetating oil (if needed)
  • tie rod end puller or pickle fork
  • adjustable wrench or open-end wrenches (sizes depend on vehicle)
  • needle-nose pliers
  • measuring tape or alignment gauge
  • torque wrench
Instructions:
  1. Secure vehicle on level ground, chock wheels, and raise front of vehicle; support with jack stands and remove the wheel for access.
  2. Loosen the jam nut on the outer tie rod and mark the position of the tie rod relative to the sleeve to preserve approximate alignment.
  3. Use a tie rod end puller or pickle fork to separate the outer tie rod end from the steering knuckle; do the same for the inner tie rod if required.
  4. Remove the old adjusting sleeve by unthreading it from the inner and outer tie rod studs. Apply penetrating oil if it is seized.
  5. Inspect tie rod studs and threads; clean any debris or corrosion from threads. Replace inner/outer tie rod ends if worn.
  6. Thread the new adjusting sleeve onto the inner tie rod (or outer as applicable) and then install the mating tie rod end. Use the marked reference to approximate the original length.
  7. Adjust sleeve to achieve the required toe setting using a measuring tape or alignment gauge; tighten jam nut to factory torque specifications.
  8. Reinstall the wheel, lower the vehicle, and torque lug nuts to specification. Have a professional wheel alignment performed to confirm precise steering geometry.
