Instructions:
- Park on a level surface, chock wheels, and loosen the wheel lug nuts slightly while vehicle is on the ground.
- Raise the vehicle with a jack, securely support it on jack stands, and remove the wheel.
- Remove the brake drum following vehicle-specific procedures. Use penetrating oil or a drum puller if the drum is stuck.
- Support the backing plate and remove the mounting bolts/nuts that attach the backing plate to the rear axle housing. Avoid putting strain on brake lines or parking brake cables.
- Carefully separate the backing plate from the axle housing and remove the old gasket material. Thoroughly clean both mating surfaces with a scraper and brake cleaner until free of grease, debris and old gasket residue.
- Position the new gasket onto the axle housing or backing plate, aligning all bolt holes. Apply a small amount of gasket sealant only if recommended for your application.
- Reinstall the backing plate and hand-thread the fasteners. Tighten bolts evenly in a crisscross pattern and torque to factory specifications (or tighten evenly and securely if specs are unavailable).
- Reinstall the brake drum and wheel, lower the vehicle, and torque the wheel lug nuts to the manufacturer's specification.
- If any brake lines or cables were disconnected, bleed the brake system as required and inspect for leaks. Perform a slow test drive to confirm proper brake operation and that no contaminants are entering the assembly.
