Installation / Application:
- Difficulty: 2/5
- Estimated time: 30-60 minutes per side
Instructions:
- Park vehicle on level ground, engage parking brake and chock rear wheels.
- Loosen the front wheel lug nuts slightly, raise the vehicle with a floor jack and support on jack stands, then remove the wheel.
- Locate the outer tie rod end connecting the tie rod to the steering knuckle and mark the position of the tie rod end on the inner tie rod for reference to maintain alignment.
- Loosen the jam nut on the inner tie rod and count the turns or note the marked position to aid reinstallation.
- Remove the cotter pin (if equipped) and loosen the castle nut or securing nut on the tie rod end stud.
- Use a tie rod end puller or pickle fork to separate the tie rod end stud from the steering knuckle; avoid striking the knuckle directly to prevent damage.
- Unscrew the outer tie rod end from the inner tie rod the number of turns recorded during removal.
- Install the new outer tie rod end by threading it onto the inner tie rod to the marked position or the same number of turns as removed.
- Insert the tie rod end stud into the steering knuckle, tighten the securing nut to the manufacturer's specified torque, and install a new cotter pin if required.
- Tighten the inner tie rod jam nut against the outer tie rod end, and if the part is greaseable, apply grease via the grease fitting until fresh grease appears.
- Reinstall the wheel, lower the vehicle, torque the wheel lug nuts to specification, and take the vehicle for a professional alignment to ensure proper steering geometry.
