Outer tie rod end (right/left hand) for 1967–1970 Ford and Mercury models. This steering linkage component secures the steering knuckle to the inner tie rod, translating steering input into wheel movement while maintaining proper alignment. Built to restore precise steering response, reduce play, and resist wear, it’s an essential replacement part for safe, reliable handling on classic Fords and Mercurys. Durable construction and straightforward fitment make it suitable for restoration projects and routine maintenance.
Features:
- Fitment: Direct fit for 1967-1970 Ford and Mercury models (outer tie rod end, right and left hand applications).
- High-strength construction resists wear and provides long service life.
- OEM-style ball stud and tapered seat ensure secure fastening to the steering knuckle.
- Helps eliminate steering play, improve tracking, and reduce uneven tire wear.
- Pre-greased or zerk-fitted options improve lubrication and longevity (check specific SKU).
- Straightforward replacement for restoration or routine steering system maintenance.
Installation / Application:
- Difficulty: 2/5
- Estimated time: 30-60 minutes per side
Instructions:
- Park on a level surface, engage parking brake and chock rear wheels. Loosen front wheel lug nuts slightly.
- Raise the vehicle with a jack and support securely on jack stands. Remove the front wheel.
- Locate the outer tie rod end at the steering knuckle. Loosen and remove the castle nut or retaining nut securing the tie rod stud to the knuckle, but do not fully remove the tie rod from the inner assembly yet.
- Mark or count the number of exposed threads/turns between the outer tie rod and inner tie rod (or mark alignment reference) to retain approximate toe alignment when installing the new part.
- Use a tie rod puller or pickle fork to separate the tie rod end stud from the steering knuckle. Remove the outer tie rod end by turning it out of the inner tie rod.
- Thread the new outer tie rod end onto the inner tie rod the same number of turns or to the alignment mark made earlier. Seat the tapered stud into the steering knuckle.
- Install and tighten the retaining nut to the manufacturer's torque specification and secure with a cotter pin if applicable.
- If the new part has a grease fitting, apply grease using a grease gun until boot is properly seated (do not over-pressurize).
- Reinstall the wheel, lower the vehicle, and torque lug nuts to specification.
- Because tie rod replacement affects toe alignment, have a professional alignment performed as soon as possible after installation.
