Outer tie rod end (right/left hand) for 1973–1980 Ford and Mercury models. This replacement part connects the steering rack/center link to the steering knuckle, maintaining proper steering geometry and vehicle control. Designed for reliable steering response, it secures the tie rod assembly, resists wear from road forces, and restores correct toe alignment after removal of worn components. Durable construction and a protective boot extend service life while offering a straightforward replacement for restoration or maintenance projects.
Features:
  • Fitment: Compatible with 1973–1980 Ford and Mercury vehicles — outer tie rod end, available in right-hand or left-hand orientation.
  • Constructed from corrosion-resistant steel for long service life and dependable steering control.
  • Seals and protective boot reduce contamination and grease loss to prevent premature failure.
  • Restores proper steering geometry and reduces play for safer, more responsive handling.
  • Straightforward replacement for restoration, routine maintenance, or collision repair.
Installation / Application:
  • Difficulty: 2/5
  • Estimated time: 30-60 minutes per side
Suggested Tools:
  • Floor jack and jack stands
  • Lug wrench or impact wrench
  • Wrenches or sockets (appropriate sizes)
  • Tie rod end puller or pickle fork
  • Pliers
  • Torque wrench
  • Marker or paint pen
  • Grease (if applicable) and rag
Instructions:
  1. Park on a level surface, engage parking brake, and loosen the wheel lug nuts slightly.
  2. Raise the vehicle with a floor jack and support securely on jack stands. Remove the wheel.
  3. Mark the relationship between the inner/adjusting sleeve and the old outer tie rod end (count turns or mark position) to preserve toe setting.
  4. Loosen the tie rod end locknut against the adjusting sleeve, then unthread the outer tie rod end several turns to free it from the sleeve.
  5. Separate the tie rod end stud from the steering knuckle using a tie rod puller or a pickle fork; avoid striking the stud directly if possible to prevent damage.
  6. Fully remove the old outer tie rod end and compare length/threads with the new part to ensure correct orientation (right-hand or left-hand).
  7. Thread the new outer tie rod end onto the adjusting sleeve to the previously marked position (or match thread count) and tighten the locknut to hold it in place.
  8. Insert the stud into the steering knuckle, secure with the supplied castle nut, and torque to vehicle specifications. Install a new cotter pin if applicable.
  9. Grease the new tie rod end if it has a grease fitting; wipe away excess grease and inspect the protective boot for a proper seal.
  10. Reinstall the wheel, lower the vehicle, and torque the wheel lug nuts to spec.
  11. Because toe can be affected by tie rod replacement, have a professional wheel alignment performed immediately after installation.
