Front lower ball joint designed for 1974–1980 Ford and Mercury passenger vehicles, engineered to restore proper suspension geometry and steering control. This direct-replacement lower front ball joint secures the steering knuckle to the control arm, resisting wear and minimizing play for crisper steering and even tire wear. Constructed from hardened steel with a protective dust boot and high-quality bearing surfaces, it provides reliable, long-lasting performance for restoration or routine maintenance projects. Ideal for classic vehicle rebuilds where durability and correct fitment are essential.
Features:
- Fits 1974-1980 Ford and Mercury models — front lower, right or left hand application
- Forged/hardened steel construction for strength and long life
- Precision mating surfaces reduce play and restore steering accuracy
- Protective dust boot seals out dirt and moisture to extend service life
- Direct OE-style replacement for classic restoration and maintenance
- Straightforward installation for DIY mechanics and professional shops
Installation / Application:
- Difficulty: 3/5
- Estimated time: 45–90 minutes per side
Instructions:
- Park vehicle on level ground, chock rear wheels, loosen front lug nuts slightly.
- Raise front of vehicle with a floor jack, support securely on jack stands, and remove the wheel.
- Remove the cotter pin and castle nut from the lower ball joint stud, then separate the ball joint from the steering knuckle using a ball joint separator or pickle fork.
- Disconnect any components (sway bar links, control arm bolts) as needed to gain access to the lower ball joint.
- If the ball joint is press-fit, use a ball joint press with appropriate adapters to press the old ball joint out of the control arm. For bolt-in designs, remove retaining bolts.
- Clean the control arm bore and inspect for damage or excessive wear; replace control arm if necessary.
- Press the new ball joint into the control arm straight and square using the press and correct adapters, or install and torque retaining bolts per vehicle specs.
- Reattach the ball joint stud to the steering knuckle, install the castle nut and torque to manufacturer specification, then insert a new cotter pin.
- Reinstall any components removed for access and torque all fasteners to spec. If the new joint is greaseable, apply grease via the fitting until the boot firms.
- Reinstall the wheel, lower the vehicle, torque lug nuts to specification, and test drive to check steering response. Follow with a professional wheel alignment if necessary.
