Outer tie rod end (right / left hand) designed to replace worn or damaged steering outer tie rod ends on 1982–1993 Ford, Lincoln, and Mercury vehicles. This part connects the steering rack to the steering knuckle, providing accurate steering response, alignment stability, and safe vehicle handling. Constructed for long service life, it restores proper steering geometry, reduces play and vibration, and simplifies wheel alignment after installation. Engineered for reliability and straightforward replacement, it’s ideal for routine maintenance or full suspension restoration projects.
Features:
- Fits 1982–1993 Ford, Lincoln, and Mercury models — outer tie rod end, available for right or left hand application.
- Durable steel construction with corrosion-resistant finish for long service life.
- Restores steering precision by eliminating play between the steering rack and knuckle.
- Factory-style ball joint and boot help prevent contamination and ensure smooth steering movement.
- Easy to install with common hand tools; suitable for professional mechanics and DIY enthusiasts.
- Ideal for suspension restoration, alignment correction, and routine steering system maintenance.
Installation / Application:
- Difficulty: 2/5
- Estimated time: 30-60 minutes per side
Instructions:
- Park on level ground, engage parking brake, and chock rear wheels.
- Loosen front wheel lug nuts, raise vehicle with jack, and secure on jack stands. Remove the wheel.
- Clean the tie rod area and locate the outer tie rod end and castle nut or retaining fastener.
- Using a marker, note the number of exposed threads or the exact position of the outer tie rod relative to the inner tie rod to preserve alignment.
- Remove the cotter pin (if present) and loosen the castle nut or nut securing the tie rod end to the steering knuckle.
- Use a tie rod end puller or ball joint separator to separate the tie rod end from the steering knuckle. Avoid striking the knuckle directly to prevent damage.
- Loosen the jam nut on the inner tie rod and unthread the outer tie rod end. Count turns or match the thread position to the removed part for approximate alignment.
- Thread the new outer tie rod end onto the inner tie rod to the previously noted position. Tighten the jam nut against the new tie rod end.
- Insert the tapered stud into the steering knuckle, torque the nut to manufacturer specifications, and install a new cotter pin if required.
- Grease the tie rod end if it has a grease fitting; otherwise ensure the boot is properly seated to keep contaminants out.
- Reinstall the wheel, lower the vehicle, and torque lug nuts to spec.
- Have the vehicle professionally aligned as soon as possible to ensure correct toe settings and even tire wear.
