Outer tie rod end for 1989-1997 Ford and Mercury models, designed to connect the steering rack to the wheel assembly and maintain precise steering geometry. This replacement outer tie rod end (available for right- or left-hand applications) secures the steering linkage, reduces play, and restores correct toe alignment. Built for durability with corrosion-resistant components and a sealed joint for long service life, it provides reliable steering response and ease of installation for routine maintenance or full suspension restoration.
Features:
- Fits 1989-1997 Ford and Mercury vehicles — outer tie rod end, right or left hand application.
- Robust steel construction with corrosion-resistant finish for long-lasting service.
- Sealed ball joint design to protect against dirt and moisture and extend life.
- Restores steering precision by eliminating play and improving toe alignment.
- Simple installation for repair or restoration projects; comes as a direct replacement.
Installation / Application:
- Difficulty: 2/5
- Estimated time: 30-75 minutes per side
Instructions:
- Park on a level surface, engage parking brake and loosen wheel lug nuts slightly.
- Raise the vehicle with a jack and support securely on jack stands. Remove the wheel.
- Locate the outer tie rod end at the steering knuckle. Apply penetrating oil to nuts/threads if corroded.
- Loosen the jam nut securing the tie rod end to the inner tie rod but do not remove it yet.
- Remove the cotter pin (if present) and unfasten the castle nut or retaining nut on the tie rod end stud.
- Use a tie rod end puller or pickle fork to separate the tie rod end from the steering knuckle; avoid striking the knuckle directly.
- Unscrew the outer tie rod end from the inner tie rod the same number of turns it takes to remove it to maintain approximate alignment.
- Install the new outer tie rod end by threading it onto the inner tie rod to the same position, then tighten the jam nut to secure.
- Insert the tie rod end stud into the steering knuckle, install and torque the retaining nut to the manufacturer's specification, and install a new cotter pin if required.
- Reinstall the wheel, lower the vehicle, and torque lug nuts to specification.
- Check and adjust front toe alignment; a professional alignment is recommended after replacement.
