Outer left-hand tie rod end for 1963–1966 Ford and Mercury cars equipped with power steering and 8-cylinder engines. This replacement part secures the steering linkage to the steering knuckle, maintaining correct toe alignment and safe, predictable steering response. Built to restore factory steering geometry, it resists wear and play that cause wandering, vibration, and uneven tire wear. Durable construction and a serviceable grease fitting improve longevity, reliability, and ease of maintenance during restoration or routine suspension service.
Features:
- Fits 1963–1966 Ford and Mercury models with power steering and 8-cylinder engines (outer tie rod end, left-hand side)
- Forged steel ball stud and housing for strength and long service life
- Secures steering linkage to the steering knuckle to maintain alignment and steering accuracy
- Greaseable design for easier maintenance and extended component life
- Direct replacement for worn or damaged original equipment; ideal for restoration and routine maintenance
- Helps reduce steering play, vibration, and uneven tire wear; simple swap for most DIY mechanics
Installation / Application:
- Difficulty: 3/5
- Estimated time: 45-90 minutes
Instructions:
- Park vehicle on level ground, set parking brake, and chock rear wheels.
- Loosen front wheel lug nuts slightly, lift the front of the car with a floor jack and support securely on jack stands, then remove the wheel.
- Locate the outer left tie rod end on the steering knuckle and clean the area to expose the castle nut and cotter pin (if present).
- Remove the cotter pin and loosen the castle nut or retaining nut. Do not fully remove the nut yet.
- Use a tie rod end puller or pickle fork to separate the tie rod end stud from the steering knuckle; once separated, remove the retaining nut and pull the tie rod end free.
- Count the number of exposed threads or measure distance from a fixed reference on the inner tie rod to the end of the outer tie rod to preserve approximate alignment before removal.
- Loosen the locking sleeve or jam nut on the inner tie rod and unthread the outer tie rod end. Remove the old tie rod end.
- Thread the new tie rod end onto the inner tie rod the same number of turns as the original (or to the previously measured length) to maintain alignment.
- Insert the new tie rod end stud into the steering knuckle, tighten the retaining nut to the vehicle manufacturer’s specified torque, and secure with a new cotter pin if applicable.
- Tighten the inner tie rod jam nut to lock the assembly in place and apply grease through the fitting if the part is greaseable.
- Reinstall the wheel, lower the vehicle, torque lug nuts to specification, and perform a professional wheel alignment as soon as possible.
