Outer tie rod end for 1969–1974 Ford and Mercury vehicles, engineered to replace worn steering components and restore precise steering alignment. This right- or left-hand outer tie rod end secures the steering linkage to the wheel spindle, maintaining correct toe settings and reducing play or wandering. Built from hardened steel with a durable protective finish and a greaseable or sealed ball stud (depending on SKU), it offers reliable durability and consistent performance for classic car restoration or routine maintenance. Easy to install for a mechanically inclined DIYer or professional technician, it helps improve steering response and prolongs the life of connected steering and suspension parts.
Features:
- Fits 1969–1974 Ford and Mercury models — outer tie rod end, right or left hand
- Hardened steel construction for strength and long service life
- Precision ball stud and tapered shank for secure, play-free steering connection
- Protective finish resists corrosion and wear in road conditions
- Greaseable or sealed design options to suit maintenance preferences
- Direct replacement for worn or damaged outer tie rod ends during restoration
Installation / Application:
- Difficulty: 3/5
- Estimated time: 45-90 minutes per side
Instructions:
- Park vehicle on level ground, chock rear wheels, loosen front wheel lug nuts slightly.
- Raise front of vehicle with jack and support securely on jack stands; remove the wheel.
- Locate the outer tie rod end at the steering knuckle; remove the cotter pin and loosen the castellated nut (if present).
- Separate the tie rod end from the steering knuckle using a tie rod end puller or carefully with a hammer and pickle fork. Avoid damaging the knuckle.
- Loosen the lock nut on the inner tie rod and count or measure the number of turns to remove the outer tie rod end (or measure threaded length) to preserve alignment settings.
- Unscrew the outer tie rod end from the inner tie rod and remove the old part.
- Thread the new outer tie rod end onto the inner tie rod the same number of turns (or to the measured length) to approximate previous alignment.
- Insert the tapered stud into the steering knuckle, tighten the nut to the manufacturer's torque spec and install a new cotter pin if required.
- Tighten the inner tie rod lock nut against the outer tie rod end to secure the adjustment.
- If greaseable, apply grease via the zerk fitting until fresh grease appears; if sealed, no greasing is required.
- Reinstall the wheel, lower the vehicle, and torque lug nuts to specification.
- Have the vehicle professionally aligned as soon as possible to ensure correct toe settings and tire wear prevention.
