Inner tie rod end for 1970–1973 Ford and Mercury vehicles, designed to connect the steering rack to the outer tie rod and maintain accurate steering geometry. This precision-forged steering component secures the inner end of the tie rod assembly, reducing play and restoring crisp steering response. Built for durability and corrosion resistance, it’s a direct-fit replacement that helps prevent premature wear of linked suspension parts and improves vehicle safety and handling. Ideal for restoration projects or routine suspension maintenance, it offers reliable performance and straightforward installation.
Features:
- Fits 1970–1973 Ford and Mercury models (inner tie rod end, right or left hand application).
- Precision-forged construction for strength and long service life.
- Restores proper steering geometry and reduces free play for improved handling.
- Corrosion-resistant finish to extend part life in varied environments.
- Direct-fit replacement for easy swap during restoration or maintenance.
- Helps prevent uneven tire wear by maintaining correct steering alignment.
- Compatible with manual and power steering systems where original design calls for inner tie rod ends.
Installation / Application:
- Difficulty: 3/5
- Estimated time: 45-90 minutes per side
Instructions:
- Park on a level surface, engage parking brake, and chock rear wheels.
- Loosen the front wheel lug nuts slightly, raise the vehicle with a jack, and secure on jack stands.
- Remove the front wheel to access the tie rod assembly.
- Locate the inner tie rod end at the steering rack; remove any protective boots or clamps covering the joint.
- Loosen the jam nut securing the inner tie rod to the outer tie rod and back it off several turns.
- Unthread the inner tie rod from the steering rack or use a tie rod end puller/pickle fork to separate the joint if required.
- Remove the old inner tie rod assembly and clean the rack threads and surrounding area.
- Install the new inner tie rod by threading it to the steering rack to the same engagement length as the original (or to manufacturer torque/spec).
- Reinstall or secure any boots and clamps, then tighten the jam nut against the new inner tie rod to the specified torque.
- Reattach the wheel, lower the vehicle, and torque the wheel lug nuts to specification.
- Because tie rod replacement affects alignment, have a professional wheel alignment performed after installation to ensure proper toe and steering performance.
