Outer tie rod end for 1978–1981 Ford and Mercury models — a critical steering linkage component that connects the steering rack or center link to the steering knuckle. Designed to restore precise steering response and remove play in worn front-end systems, this replacement tie rod end provides durable performance with a high-strength ball stud and corrosion-resistant finish. Ideal for restoration projects or routine suspension maintenance, it improves handling, reduces tire wear, and helps maintain proper wheel alignment.
Features:
- Fits 1978-1981 Ford and Mercury passenger vehicles (outer tie rod end, right and left hand applications).
- High-strength steel construction with a precision-machined ball stud for accurate steering control.
- Secures steering linkage to the steering knuckle, eliminating play and improving handling.
- Corrosion-resistant coating and durable boot to protect internal components from dirt and moisture.
- Greaseable/replaceable design (if applicable) for extended service life and easier maintenance.
- Direct-fit replacement for OEM geometry — great for restorations and routine front-end repair.
Installation / Application:
- Difficulty: 2/5
- Estimated time: 30-60 minutes per side
Instructions:
- Park vehicle on a level surface, engage parking brake and chock rear wheels.
- Loosen wheel lug nuts, raise the front of the vehicle with a floor jack and secure with jack stands. Remove the wheel.
- Locate the outer tie rod end and loosen the jam nut on the inner tie rod while counting the number of turns required to remove the outer tie rod end (or measure length) to preserve alignment.
- Remove the cotter pin (if present) and loosen the castle nut securing the tie rod end to the steering knuckle. Use a tie rod puller or pickle fork to separate the tie rod end from the knuckle; a sharp tap with a hammer may help.
- Unscrew the outer tie rod end from the inner tie rod to the same number of turns/measured length noted earlier, then remove the old unit.
- Thread the new outer tie rod end onto the inner tie rod to the same position/number of turns measured earlier. If the part is greaseable, apply grease via the zerk fitting until boot is firm but not overfilled.
- Insert the ball stud into the steering knuckle and tighten the castle nut to the manufacturer-specified torque. Install a new cotter pin if required.
- Tighten the jam nut against the new tie rod end to secure the adjustment.
- Reinstall the wheel, lower the vehicle, and torque wheel lug nuts to specification.
- Because small changes in tie rod length affect alignment, have a professional wheel alignment performed or verify toe settings before driving.
